Destiny
So here it is, the first time since those initial first steps into video gaming that I took with a ZX Spectrum, followed more successfully with a Sega Master System, that I’ve ever ventured ‘online’ with my game playing. Okay, I guess Journey was the first game I played where you actually found yourself in the same world as other players, but Destiny is the first time I’ve ever actually actively embraced online play, and you know what, I think I kinda like it.
I’ve always been a little put off by online gaming because for me, playing the games has mostly been about the stories, apart from a few exceptions the solo campaigns have always been my main interest, competitive multiplayer never really interested me and as most of my friends aren’t really in to gaming, or haven’t owned the same consoles, co-op has never really been an option, after all, how would I find people to play with? But with Destiny I had to throw myself into it, you can play the game solo, but really you’re not going to get that far, and even just playing missions you come across other players so you really don’t have much of a choice.
So I joined a clan and away I went. Yea, I’m pretty useless when it comes to PvP in the crucible, I’m normally not the worst, but if this was a playground sport I don’t think I’d be picked first, but that doesn’t really matter, much of the Destiny online experience is going on strikes and story missions where you are teamed up with others and here I can generally hold my own and it’s a lot of fun teaming up with a good group to run some of the more difficult strikes. Even now I’ve not managed to try the vault of glass, but maybe I’ll find a team to join soon.
The game itself, well if you read the forums people complain about most aspects of it, that it’s not really even finished, but for me as a first time online gamer I’ve found it to be a really nice introduction. If like me you’ve shied away from online for any reason then maybe give it a go, you can start off playing solo and then take some tentative first steps into strikes using the match making, after which who knows, maybe you’ll end up taking on the guys from Bungie in the iron banner!
If you’ve got a Playstation and you’re ever roaming around Mars looking for Relic Iron and come across a lone hunter by the name of petetropolis then feel free to drop me a friend request.
